- Steven L. Denlinger is a memoirist, journalist, and screenwriter whose stories center around themes of community, repression, and redemption. His upcoming memoir, How To To Tie A Tie, is a coming-of-age story that follows his departure from a sheltered Amish-Mennonite community in small-town Ohio and subsequent journey through the electrifying worlds of London, Hollywood, Los Angeles and now Seattle. Using education as a ladder of escape from fundamentalism, Steven clinched his escape from his claustrophobic home by winning a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to study in London. By the end of that year, the Berlin Wall had fallen—and Steven had abandoned the Mennonite world, alienating his community but gaining his B.A. and his hard-won freedom. His memoir pieces in The Huffington Post focused on these formative years. After leaving, Steven studied at Oxford University while working on his M.A. in English from Middlebury College. A major force in Steven’s writing has been the thousands of friends who read and responded to his regular posts on Facebook, an online community built from over 30 years of teaching. Literary agent Chip MacGregor represents his memoir.
